Your Technical Guide to Choosing the Right Lens

Ensure optimal image quality and performance by choosing the right machine vision lenses that suit the industry and application. Defining application requirements comes first when selecting the perfect machine vision lenses. Choose the type of lenses as per requirement and make sure that it is compatible with the camera's sensor size and pixel density. Further, check for the lens' compatibility with the mounting requirements of the machine vision system in reference.

Camera sensor size is defined by the Pixel Size and the no of Pixels across H & V. Lens format is the step 1 in lens selection. Lens sensor format needs to be same or bigger than the camera sensor format and same applies for optical resolution of lens.

The next step in lens selection is the focal length calculation based on the Field of View and the operating working distance. Focal lengths vary from 3.5mm to 100mm depending on the lense formats.

Lens selection is incomplete without choosing the lens mount depending on the camera mount. We offer lenses from S mount to TFL mount suitable for the large format camera sensors. We also offer lens mount adapters.

Minimum object Distance is the minimum distance at which the focus can be achieved with the lens. Working distance is the distance from the object to the front edge of the lens. WD must be more than the MoD for a focused image.

After the right selection of camera and lens, the best image results depend on the focus adjustment and the lighting condition. The aperture controls the amount of light to be reaching the sensor through the lens, and hence the image quality.

The extension tube is used to increase the magnification while decreasing WD. Rear converter is used to increase the magnification without changing the WD. Filters & polarizers also used based on the application requirement.
